Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Why Ontario Homeowners Choose HeatShield Chimney Cleaning
We’re an independent chimney service offering HeatShield service in Ontario that works with the HeatShield ceramic resurfacing system, and we clean and maintain HeatShield-treated chimneys across the Inland Empire. The short version: HeatShield is a heat-cured refractory coating that restores damaged flue tiles and fireboxes without a full tear-out, but it only holds up when the surface underneath is cleaned to bare masonry first. That’s the step we treat as non-negotiable on every HeatShield job we touch in Ontario.
We’ve rebuilt fireboxes and relined flues with HeatShield’s Cerfractory materials in enough Montclair HeatShield service areas and Ontario tract homes to know where the system excels and where it fails. We’re not affiliated with or authorized by HeatShield, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we are is a chimney company that’s done the work, seen the failures, and learned what actually makes the coating last through Southern California heat cycles and Santa Ana wind seasons. Call (833) 467-7685 if you want straight answers about your HeatShield chimney.
Why Trust Ontario Chimney for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?
Al Vickers grew up in the Sultana neighborhood of Ontario, a few blocks from Euclid Avenue, and he’s spent the better part of three decades learning what the Inland Empire does to a chimney. The dry summers bake the clay tile. The Santa Ana winds push debris into uncapped flues. And the quick cold snaps send every homeowner to their fireplace at once, which means thermal cycling hits older fireboxes hard. That’s the environment HeatShield materials have to survive here, and we know how to prep them for it.
Our technicians understand HeatShield’s products the way only hands-on work teaches. The Cerfractory flue sealant cures differently depending on ambient temperature and humidity, which matters in Ontario’s dry heat. The firebox restoration mortar needs a specific substrate profile or it won’t bond properly. We’ve seen what happens when someone rushes that prep, and we’ve fixed the results. When we clean a HeatShield chimney, we inspect the coating for delamination, check the smoke chamber transition where failures concentrate, and document what we find with camera images so you can see it yourself. We’ll tell you what we found, show you the evidence, and give you options.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Ontario
- Cerfractory flue liner delamination and flaking. This is the failure we see most often in Ontario, and the cause is almost always the same: the flue wasn’t cleaned to bare masonry before the coating went on. Soot and creosote trapped between the HeatShield layer and the original tile create a weak bond, and after a season or two of heating and cooling the lining starts to peel. We’ll remove what’s loose, clean the flue properly, and recoat only where it will actually adhere.
- Firebox resurfacing failing at the smoke chamber transition. The area where the firebox narrows into the smoke chamber takes the worst thermal stress in the whole chimney. HeatShield refractory mortar can crack there within a couple of seasons if the original transition wasn’t properly keyed and cleaned. In Ontario tract homes with 50-year-old masonry, we regularly find the refractory coat pulling away from the brick right at that transition point. “A clean flue isn’t a luxury – it’s just how the thing is supposed to work.”
- Powdering or loosening mortar along hearth and side walls. Moisture intrusion from uncapped chimneys or failed crowns works its way into the firebox, and repeated heat-up/cool-down cycles loosen the resurfacing. We’ll identify the moisture source before we recoat, or the same failure comes back within a year.
- Crown coating cracking over an already-damaged crown. HeatShield CrownSeal works on sound crowns. If the crown underneath is cracked through or still settling, the coating will crack again with it. We assess the crown structurally before applying anything.
- Bird and bee debris inside HeatShield-treated flues. Ontario’s fireplaces sit unused from April through November, and uncapped flues collect nests, palm fronds, and occasionally a full bee hive. That debris sits on the HeatShield surface, traps moisture against it, and accelerates deterioration. A proper cap and seasonal cleaning prevents most of it.
HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We use genuine HeatShield refractory materials where the repair depends on their specific cure profile and heat rating: the Cerfractory flue sealant, the firebox restoration mortar, and the CrownSeal product line. Where HeatShield doesn’t make a component, we switch to compatible quality materials rather than forcing the brand into a job it wasn’t designed for. That’s the honest approach, and it’s why our HeatShield repairs in Ontario hold up.
The decision to repair or replace comes down to one question: is the structure underneath sound enough for a coating to work? HeatShield is a resurfacing system, not a structural rebuild. If your flue tiles are shifted or the firebox brick is crumbling beyond surface repair, we’ll tell you and recommend a stainless liner or firebox rebuild instead. We won’t sell you a coating that can’t hold. Call (833) 467-7685 and we’ll give you a camera-verified assessment before quoting anything.
Our HeatShield Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis. We run a camera up the flue and inspect the firebox, smoke chamber, and crown. We’re looking for delamination, cracks at the smoke chamber transition, moisture intrusion, and the condition of any existing HeatShield coating. You see the images we see.
- 2
Surface prep. Before any HeatShield material touches your chimney, we clean the flue to bare masonry and strip any failed refractory coat. In Ontario’s dry season this is the step that decides whether the repair lasts – skip it and the new coating has nothing to bond to.
- 3
Repair or recoat. We apply the HeatShield material appropriate to the job: Cerfractory for flue resurfacing, refractory mortar for firebox restoration, CrownSeal for crown coating. Environmental conditions matter here, so we schedule applications for when Ontario’s temperature and humidity will let the material cure properly.
- 4
Test and verify. After curing, we run the camera again and document the finished surface. You get a photo report showing what was done, and we confirm the flue is clear and drafting properly.
- 5
Warranty and maintenance guidance. We tell you what the manufacturer’s coverage is, what it doesn’t include, and what you need to do to keep it valid. Then we give you an honest maintenance schedule based on how you actually use your fireplace in Ontario’s climate.

AfterHeatShield Products We Service & Install in Ontario
We service and install the full HeatShield system across Ontario and nearby communities: the Cerfractory Flue Sealant (heat-cured refractory liner), the Firebox Restoration System (refractory mortar for spalled brick and deteriorated mortar joints), the Resurfacing Mortar line, and the Crown Repair/CrownSeal products. We also provide HeatShield service in Upland. We stock genuine HeatShield materials for flue resurfacing, firebox repair, and crown coating jobs, which means shorter turnaround on most Ontario service calls. If your chimney has an existing HeatShield coating that’s showing wear, we can assess it, clean it, and recoat only what’s failed.
We Also Service These Brands
HeatShield is one system in our toolkit, not the whole toolkit. We also work with DuraFlex stainless steel liner systems for full relines when a coating isn’t structurally appropriate, and Gelco components for chimney caps and damper systems. If your chimney needs something beyond what HeatShield can safely handle, we’ll tell you and install what actually fits the job.
FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Service in Ontario
No. We’re an independent chimney service in Ontario, and we’re not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by HeatShield. That independence matters: we’ll tell you when a HeatShield repair is the right call and when it isn’t, because we don’t have a manufacturer agreement pushing us to apply their products on every job.
No, not reliably. If the old refractory coat is pulling away from the brick, the new material won’t bond to it. We remove the failed coating, clean the surface to bare masonry, and only then apply fresh HeatShield refractory mortar. Anything short of that is a patch job that’ll crack again in Ontario’s heat cycles.
Almost always because the flue wasn’t cleaned to bare masonry before the liner was applied. Soot and creosote left between the ceramic coating and the original tile weaken the bond, and thermal cycling does the rest. We’ve fixed dozens of these in Ontario by removing the loose material, properly cleaning the flue, and recoating only what’s sound.
Yes, when the firebox structure underneath is sound and the surface was prepped correctly. A properly applied HeatShield firebox restoration can last for years. The failures we see in Ontario are almost always prep failures, not material failures. We’ll give you a camera-verified assessment so you know what you’re starting with.
It depends on how cracked and whether the crown is still moving. If the crown has hairline cracks but is structurally stable, CrownSeal can extend its life. If the crown is cracked through or settling, the coating will crack again with it. We’ll inspect and tell you honestly which situation you have. Call (833) 467-7685 for that assessment.
HeatShield is designed for masonry fireboxes and flues, and it works on wood-burning fireplaces where thermal cycling is the main stressor. Gas and insert fireplaces have different venting requirements, and we’ll evaluate each one before recommending any resurfacing. In some Ontario and HeatShield in Chino homes with older gas inserts, the correct answer is a liner replacement, not a coating.
HeatShield chimney cleaning in Ontario typically runs between $180 and $340 for a standard sweep and inspection. If the inspection finds failing HeatShield coating that needs a recoat, that’s a separate repair quote based on the square footage and condition of the surface. Call (833) 467-7685 for an exact quote – estimates are free, and we’ll show you the camera evidence before we quote anything.
